- An atom is the basic building block of
- all matter. Atoms are composed of protons,
- neutrons, and electrons. A proton has an
- associated positive charge defined to be +1. A
- neutron has a neutral charge and has
- approximately the same mass as a proton.
- Both the protons and neutrons are located in
- the center of the atom, an area called the
- nucleus. Since protons and neutrons form the
- nucleus, they are known as nucleons. An
- electron has an associated negative charge
- equal in magnitude to the positive charge of
- the proton. The electron has a mass of about
- 1/1800th the mass of a proton and orbits the
- nucleus. Since opposite charges attract, the
- negatively charged electrons are attracted to
- he positively charged nucleus and therefore
- tend to remain in orbit.
